Besides going to the doctor and having blood work, one way to tell if you need vitamin D is to check your pH.
Some people believe that your pH should be 7.3 while this is true, this is the pH value of your blood. Normally we aren't looking at blood, we are looking at urine or saliva or both. If your pH in the saliva or urine is less than the ideal 6.4 (or 6.2 is acceptable) then your system is toward the acid side and Vitamin D will support you. I use a professional grade of Vitamin D from Biotics Research that goes under the tongue and is 2000iu per drop. This way is very effective in absorbing the vitamin. These Vitamin D drops are $19.95 and I keep them on hand for my clients. If you need some, we can do a quick consult by phone or in person (for local people) and I can get it to you. There is no charge for the initial consultation and setting up your account with me.
